Last updated: May 1, 2026

Memory of Ord respects copyright. If you think something on the service infringes a copyright you own (or are authorized to act for), send a notice as described below and it will be reviewed. If you think your content was taken down by mistake, you can send a counter-notice. This page describes the process under the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

How to report infringement

Email a notice to memoryoford@gmail.com that includes the following:

  • A description of the copyrighted work you believe was infringed.
  • A link or other clear pointer to where the infringing content lives on Memory of Ord (so it can be located).
  • Your name, mailing address, phone number, and email address.
  • A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use of the material is not authorized by you, your agent, or the law.
  • A statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner’s behalf.
  • Your physical or electronic signature.

If anything important is missing, you may be asked to send an updated notice before content can be acted on.

What happens after a valid notice

Content that appears to infringe will be removed or disabled, and the user who posted it will be notified. Repeated infringement may lead to account termination (see below).

Counter-notice

If you believe content of yours was removed by mistake or misidentification, you can send a counter-notice to memoryoford@gmail.com including:

  • A description of the content that was removed and where it used to appear on Memory of Ord.
  • Your name, mailing address, phone number, and email address.
  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the content was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  • A statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court in your judicial district (or, if you live outside the United States, the federal court in California where Memory of Ord is operated), and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice.
  • Your physical or electronic signature.

A valid counter-notice will be forwarded to the original reporter. If they don’t file a court action within ten to fourteen business days, the removed content may be restored.

Repeat infringers

Accounts that repeatedly post infringing content will be terminated. What counts as “repeated” is judged on a case-by-case basis.

Bad-faith claims

U.S. law (17 U.S.C. § 512(f)) allows damages, including attorneys’ fees, against anyone who knowingly sends a materially false notice or counter-notice. Please make sure your claim is honest and accurate before sending.
